The hole in the doughnut has been attributed to the Pennsylvania Dutch who punched holes in the original Dutch 'olykoeks'. The hole has also been attributed to a New England sea captain, Hanson Gregory, who, in 1847 punched holes in the dough because his mother's donuts were not cooked in the center. Neither of them were the first to have thought of the idea though. Archaeologists have found petrified fried cakes with holes in them in the southwestern U.S. in prehistoric Native American ruins. So donuts have been invented more than once.
